creACTiVE FAQs

Does my child need to have any prior music training?

It is preferable if participants who wish to play instruments (guitar, drums, keyboard, bass etc) have some very basic understanding of 3 to 4 chords and the ability to keep in time. This makes the journey and experience more enjoyable for all participants.

Singers need not have any prior experience (singing in the shower is ok and is encouraged).

creACTiVE is an inclusive music program and will assist individuals to perform as part of a group. Their playing of instruments will improve over the term, however this group performance will not replace the learning that one will gain from individual music tuition. The creACTiVE experience is all about group-based music-making (playing in a band with others).

How are creACTiVE Programs different to 'traditional' music lessons?

creACTiVE is a new, fresh approach to engaging young people in a meaningful way (their meaning - not ours). Call it a NEW OPERATING SYSTEM. creACTiVE's operating system is all about learning and creating from 'doing' and using the imagination and passion of participants who are guided and mentored by highly skilled creACTiVE Music Coaches. Our Coaches listen to participants, work with them as a team and empower them to achieve. We don't teach, we coach - learn more about our specialist coaches.

Coach = Support, nurture, guide, instruct.

Teacher = Tell, teach, impose.

What is 'Recreational Music-Making'?

“Recreational Music-making encompasses enjoyable, accessible and fulfilling group, music-based activities that unite people of all ages regardless of their challenges, backgrounds, ethnicity, ability or prior experience. From exercise, nurturing, social support, bonding and spirituality to intellectual stimulation, heightened understanding and an enhanced capacity to cope with life’s challenges the benefits of Recreational Music-making extend far beyond music. It ultimately affords unparalleled creative expression that unites our bodies, minds and spirits.” – Karl T. Bruhn

According to Webster, the word “recreational” comes from the Latin root “recreatio,” signifying restoration to health.

Recreational Music-making is music for non-musical objectives or outcomes.
